Caring for Your Crystals

As we are unaware of the type of energy a crystal may have absorbed before we take it home, it is important to cleanse it. There are many different ways of cleansing a crystal and the choice is generally a personal one. With each of the following cleansing rituals, it is important to remember that the emphasis is on your intent.

Cleansing

Immerse Crystal in Water

It is preferable to immerse your crystal into running water, such as a stream, ocean (need to be careful with this one), water fall, river. Never place in stagnant muddy water to avoid absorbing the energy . It is advisable to put crystals in a natural fibre bag and if more than one crystal in its natural state, individually wrapping them would stop them getting broken. In the absence of flowing water, crystals may be placed in a bowl with filtered, distilled or spring water. Crystals may be left for 1 hour or overnight, this is a personal and or intuitive choice. Crystals should be placed in cold water only and after cleansing left to dry naturally. The following crystals may lose their polish or disintegrate if placed in water:

  • Calcite
  • Halite
  • Celestite
  • Lapis Lazuli (natural form)
  • Turquoise (natural form)
  • Angelite
  • Bornite
  • Apophyllite
  • Azurite Malachite
  • Selenite

Running Under Cold Water

With the intent of cleansing your crystal, hold crystal under tap of running cold water. Visualise the purist of white light penetrating the crystal and removing all negativity from it. Do this for about 1 minute or until you feel intuitively that it is enough. Allow your crystal to dry naturally.

Pure Intention

Visualise fire or white light coming into your crown and out your mouth. Allow the energy to build up before breathing onto the crystal with the intent of releasing the energy and cleansing the crystal.

Earth Cleansing

Bury your crystal in the earth or in a pot plant for deep cleansing. Leave for as long as you feel it is needed or around 12 hours.

Smudging

This ancient ritual is still commonly used today. Sage is commonly used but other herbs such as nag champah, myrrh, frankincense, cedar can be used. A smudge stick can actually be purchased for this reason  or you can place your own herbs in an abalone shell, clay pot or other heat proof bowl. Palo Santo is another beautiful product to use to smudge and cleanse your crystals, room and yourself.

Sound

Vibrations of sound may effectively cleanse eg Tibetan bowls, chanting

Charging your Crystals

Amethyst Cluster

Amethyst crystals have the ability to absorb and transmute negative energies, thereby requiring less cleansing. To cleanse and charge small crystals place them on top of a programmed cluster( it has the intent of charging crystals) and leave for around 12 hours.

Sunlight/Moonlight

Place crystals out in the sun or moonlight for up to 12 hours . When cleansing with moonlight, it may be a good idea to cover your crystals with a net so curious small animals can’t claim them as their own. You need to be careful in sunlight with some crystals as they fade in sunlight. This method is great for cleansing and charging The frequency of cleansing will depend on how often they are used and the environment in which they live. Crystals used in healing sessions need to be cleansed after each session.
